Thank you letter from Jennifer
Hallo Hyndburn Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers Scouts, Young Leaders, Leaders and members of the Scout Fellowship.
Well, if I've ever been stitched up, you all certainly did it on Sunday at our St Georges Day Parade. As you all well know, I am not often "stuck for words" but I was really surprised and grateful for the lovely presents you all gave to me.
The painting of Pendle Hill and the collection of photographs of "my antics" will take pride of place in my living room, where I will constantly see them, the flowers are beautiful and the Teddy Bear makes me laugh every time I look at it. Are my feet really that big? Tracy thought that the Beavers may like to have a competition to name her! And thank you for the personal gifts that had been made by the youngsters themselves. I will come around and say thank you at your meetings. Also a thank you for the lovely thought of asking Louise Cooper, our County Commissioner, to present me with a replacement Silver Acorn, the original was stolen when I had my car broken into.
I have enjoyed being your District Commissioner and will "hand over the reins" on the 7th May at our AGM, 11 years to the day that I took over. Some of you would not have been born when that happened!
I have had the honour of leading the District through one of the most important periods of change in the history of Scouting. The Millenium and the Millenium county camp. Do you remember the campsite entrance being lit by candles and the Explorers constructing a "Dome" which they lit up and could be seen from the main road. The Queens Jubilee celebrations and county camp, the changes to the Scouting programme, age groups, a new section - Explorers and the Young Leader programme, uniforms, girls being able to join all the sections, the abolition of the upper age range for Leaders to "move on", A new training programme for Leaders, new activity authorisations, a new "Nights Away scheme". A new method of recruiting new Leaders and Helpers and those CRB forms! And of course, our centenary of Scouting and county camp and the World Scout Jamboree held at Hylands Park in Essex of which I was so lucky to be able to attend as a member of the International Service Team. The county show, earlier this year and I am sure there is loads more that has happened and you will all have your own personal memories too.
I have such a lot of happy memories over the last 11 years and the support I have received from everyone through the good times and the not so good times. I haven't always seen "eye to eye" with the Leaders, but we have always managed to work through our differences and we have always had the well being of the youngsters as our main aim.
I want to thank you all, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Young Leaders, Leaders and members of the Scout Fellowship, for making me welcome at your meetings whenever I have visited you. I have a lot of happy memories. I have also had a superb District Team, who have been there to support, put forward their ideas, progress their sections and assist me in supporting new Leaders. Oh yes, and scheme behind my back!!!!!
I will be remaining in the District, to support your new District Commissioner, and will still be undertaking the Nights Away assessments for Leaders and continue with the role of District Explorer Scout Commissioner and developing the Young Leader scheme.
I am sure that you will give your new District Commissioner, Gerald Tipling, the support you have given me and I am confident that Hyndburn will continue to go from strength to strength.
Thank you
Jennifer Turner
